Staging (Seeding) Initial VM Backup

文章分類:

Because VMs are often large, the initial VM backup can be slow and time consuming when done over WAN, and can also put undesirable load on the network when done over LAN. To speed up the initial backup and save network bandwidth, you can perform staged backup: run the initial backup on a removable media (such as an external USB hard drive), transfer the media to a new location, and then run incremental backup to the new location.

To perform staged backup, follow the steps below:

1. Create a new Backup Repository.

2. Create a new backup job with the following options:

a. In Backup Job Wizard for VMware: STEP 1, choose VMs for which you want to run staged backup.
b. In Backup Job Wizard for VMware: STEP 2 choose the Backup Repository you have created.
c. In Backup Job Wizard for VMware: STEP 3 select the Do not schedule, run on demand option.
d. In Backup Job Wizard for VMware: STEP 4 specify required backup options.

3. Run the backup job.
4. After the job has completed, move the Backup Repository to a new location.
5. If required, edit the backup job and specify a schedule for the backup job in Backup Job Wizard for VMware: STEP 3.
